INTERNSHIPS

Grow Strong Internship Description Fall/Summer 2012


Grow Strong currently offers three internships and accepts applications year round. These internships offer the opportunity to spend between 20-40 hours a week working directly with Grow Strong staff, learning how the organization operates, applying theoretical knowledge, and building personal experience by living and working with the rural community served from the Grow Strong headquarters and Training & Demonstration Centre in Bondo, Kenya, East Africa. Internships are a minimum of 3 months full time, but preferably a 6-12 month commitment.

HEALTH & NUTRITION ADVOCATE

Grow Strong, a nonprofit organization that revives food security using local resources, seeks a Health and Nutrition Advocate to be part of our "Local Food First" District wide campaign. Through the program, a regional database will be created documenting recipes, ingredients, and local chefs possessing preparation knowledge. The campaign is aimed at mainstreaming local and traditional food as a first choice for health concerns or general diet. The intern will assist staff with the following duties:

Responsibilities

  • Working with Advisory Council to document Regional Database of traditional food recipes.
  • Facilitate weekly cooking demonstrations at the local markets
  • Organize promotional events and cookoffs at the Grow Strong Regional Training Centre
  • Design local recipes cookbook in English and Dholuo
  • Work with school aged youth to initiate nutrition and agriculture clubs
  • Collaborate in fundraising opportunities and documentation program growth
  • Write weekly blog posts

Requirement

  • Strong Community/rural development experience
  • Adaptability -Creativity -Detail oriented and organized
  • Strong Writing and Proofreading skills
  • Strong Health or Nutrition Education
  • Knowledge of Development and Sustainable Agriculture issues in Africa
  • Willingness to study culture and language, Swahili or Dholuo language a plus
  • Competent computer skills in Microsoft Office, Excel, Powerpoint and Word, suite a plus.

AGRICULTURE & CO-OPERATIVE FARMING COORDINATOR

Grow Strong, a nonprofit organization that revives food security using local resources, seeks an Agriculture & Co-operative Farming Coordinator to be part of establishing the regions first resource center dedicated to nutrition and traditional farming. Additionally, establishing local interest in farmer cooperatives that explore as well as assist from production to marketing opportunities. The centre will demonstrate traditional farming techniques and operate several demonstration plots producing traditional, local crops at the appropriate season in efforts to create employment opportunities. The intern will assist staff with the following duties:

Responsibilities

  • Working with Advisory Council to document Regional Database to identify traditional crops and their sources.
  • Create a traditional seed banking initiative that can serve the entire region
  • Meet regularly with local farmers towards creating food co-operatives
  • Organize demonstration events and tours at the Grow Strong Regional Training Centre & Farm
  • Work with Farm manager to assist with planting local crops and demonstration garden on-site
  • Work with other interns and staff to initiate school agriculture opportunities
  • Collaborate in fundraising opportunities and documentation program growth
  • Write weekly blog posts

Requirements

  • Strong Community/rural development experience
  • Adaptability -Creativity -Detail oriented and organized
  • Strong Practical Sustainable Agriculture Experience
  • Knowledge of Development and Sustainable Agriculture issues in Africa
  • Willingness to study culture and language, Swahili or Dholuo language a plus
  • Competent computer skills in Microsoft Office, Excel, Powerpoint and Word, suite a plus.


FOOD CULTURE & ARTS EDUCATION

Grow Strong, a nonprofit organization that revives food security using local resources, seeks a Food Culture & Arts Education Coordinator to be part of establishing the regions first resource center dedicated to nutrition and traditional farming. The centre will create a sense of community through food culture storytelling and educating through art and paint. The intern will assist staff with the following duties:

Responsibilities

  • Working with Advisory Council to document regional food culture and display pictorally.
  • Create a welcoming, inspiring community centre that can serve the entire region
  • Draft artistic displays with input from the community educating on the importance of local food
  • Work with other interns and staff to create useful educational art  
  • Collaborate in fundraising opportunities and documentation of project impact
  • Write weekly blog posts


Requirements

  • Strong Artistic Design, specifically muraling and painting
  • Ability to work well with others
  • Lead and recruit volunteers to create a sense of ownership and inspiration
  • Adaptability -Creativity -Detail oriented and organized
  • Create project timeline and follow it to completion
  • Willingness to study culture and language, Swahili or Dholuo language a plus
